Thriving on Throwing

Barry Zito answers questions at Jaeger Sports Camp
Your arm can either complete you as a player or become something that you are trying to hide.
When a baseball player develops arm problems (chronic pain, inflammation, injury) or poor mechanics his career is immediately put into jeopardy. This is unfortunate, when you consider that 99% of arm injuries can be avoided in the first place.
Jaeger Sports' off-season training camp for amateur baseball players (adopted from our Professional Off-Season Program) is designed to optimize a player's development by providing a baseball camp for training only. Because players (pitchers in particular) tend to spend their off-season throwing in game situations, there is little or no time to actually develop their arm strength, mechanics (release point, arm speed, rhythm), off-speed pitches and mental approach. Jaeger Sports has found that players and pitchers who use the summertime simply for getting more innings, more experience or more exposure may actually be stunting the progress of their development.
There are several reasons for this:- The off-season (summer) should be used to build up arm strength, solidify mechanics and develop a consistent mental approach to pitching.
- Because arms are often sore and tired at the end of a long season, the last thing a player or a pitcher wants to do is deplete his arm strength and risk injury by throwing more innings.
- Pitchers who have poor mechanics will tend to reinforce those mechanics (which leads to an inconsistent release point and potential injury).
- Pitchers will have little or no time to develop additional pitches (i.e. change-up).
Therefore, our program is designed to develop the complete player through a process that provides consistent reinforcement in a training environment. By building up arm strength, developing sounder mechanics and strengthening a player's mental focus over an extended period of time, each player will have the opportunity to build a strong foundation that can sustain itself throughout the remainder of his career. After all, isn't that what a baseball player is supposed to do in his off-season-train?

By staying in the process of your workout, you will learn the importance of physical and mental consistency. It is through this quality of attention in all situations that will ultimately carry over into game situations. |
